Welcome to the blog for the Cincinnati .Net Users Group.

January 2008 - Posts

  • Did you get an odd Survey newsletter?

If you received a newsletter announcement about the survey I'll bet you're thinking..."what's up with the formatting?"  Well, it seems the images and layout didn't make it out.  There is supposed to be this really nice image of a car and the text is white on a blue background that says:

    "Help Drive CINNUG!
You can help drive the user group by taking a few minutes to complete a survey for us. The answers to this survey will help drive the direction of the group and determine if we need to tweak our current meeting style.

But instead you just see a giant white space with the Help Drive CINNUG and click link text (the other text is there, it's just in a white font color).  Hmmm, so trust me, it looked better in the preview. :)

  • CINNUG Survey Published

The last few meetings I've mentioned that a survey was coming....well, now it's here!  If you are a member of CINNUG please take a few minutes (it won't take long I promise) and complete a survey for us.  The answers to this survey will help drive the direction of the group and determine if we need to tweak our current meeting style.

Here is the survey link: http://app.icontact.com/icp/sub/survey/start?sid=804&cid=189827

  • January 2008 Meeting Recap

Ken Baum gave his talk on the Web Client Software Factory from the Microsoft Patterns and Practices group. If you're an ASP.Net developer you should at least download the bits and take a look.  Ken's slide deck can be found on our downloads site.

Attendance (38): This was a great month on attendance.  We are very interested in growing the group, so please bring your colleagues.  If you blog, please start blogging about the group (if you aren't already).

    2008 Annual Sponsors

We've almost maxed out our 2008 annual sponsorship!  So far we have all of our 2007 sponsors continuing to help us out: IBS, SDS and Robert Half.  We have two new sponsors for 2008, but I can only mention one at this time: Resurgent Capital Services.  Annual sponsors provide financial support for the User Group so that we can continue to operate as a free organization for our members.  If you get a chance to thank our sponsors, please do.

We have three honorary annual sponsors which provide some service to the group.  MAX Technical Training provides the meeting space every month and has since we were founded! JetBrains provides copies of ReSharper to give away at every meeting.  Finally, Server Intellect provides our web hosting.

Next Month - February 19th, 6:00 PM at MAX

You asked for it!  Well, one of you did anyway....a topic on comparing various source control applications and best practices in using them.
This will be a very interactive meeting, so bring your questions about source control!  We'll have three panel members who between the three of them have experience with VSS, TFS, Harvest, ClearCase, Vault and Subversion.

Speakers: Mike Shields, Justin Kohnen and Nino Benvenuti

We often hear IT and business leaders question their organization’s ability to access data and information from their primary business systems. Typically, information is manually extracted from these business systems and saved into disconnected Excel files for use by executives, managers, and general business users. This can create unrest among the IT team who loses control of this information, and dissatisfaction across the user community who is stuck with data that is often outdated.

Business leaders today want better, faster insight into their organization’s performance.  At this event you will learn how to monitor, analyze, and plan around key business activities using automated metrics. As business and technology leaders, you will learn how dashboards and analysis capabilities can dramatically improve team performance, providing easy-to-use yet powerful analytical tools to staff at different levels, helping managers make faster, better informed decisions.

    · Make better, more effective business decisions with up-to-date information
    · Implement metrics to show historic trends and progress toward goals
    · Share metrics with your team to focus your people on success

The business intelligence platform from Microsoft including SharePoint, PerformancePoint and SQL Server provides high-performance analytical database components and leading-edge monitoring, analytical, and planning capabilities. These components are well integrated and are delivered in a user-friendly, web-based environment that’s simple to use by staff at all levels of the organization.

This event provides an overview of these best practices and project approaches from both business and technical perspectives.  You will see case studies and demonstrations for sales, marketing, and finance activities that demonstrate first-hand how these tools have helped other organizations. You will also see working examples of how these dashboards were built using the Microsoft BI platform.

We look forward to meeting you at this upcoming event. Event seating is limited, so please register as soon as possible.

    Event Agenda:

    8:00 AM – Continental Breakfast
8:30 AM – Welcome and Overview of Using Automated Metrics
9:30 AM – Best Practices for Dashboard Planning, Implementation
10:30 AM – Solution Examples, Case Studies and Dashboard Components
    11:30 AM – Wrap-up and Closing Remarks

BlueGranite is a Microsoft Gold Partner and Microsoft BI Virtual Technical Specialist, working with upper mid-market and enterprise clients since 1996. We are the leader in implementing performance dashboards that enable users across the organization to monitor, analyze, and manage critical business activities. BlueGranite is headquartered in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

  • CINNUG Celebrates 3 Years with INETA

Today the mail delivered a recognition award for CINNUG: 3 years with INETA! The award included a nice letter from Chris Wallace (below) and a certificate:

    Dear Mike Wood,

Congratulations on your INETA user group membership anniversary!

It Is always great to work with people like you - leaders building our user group community. Successful user groups have a strong leader, like you, with a core support group working for the common good of the developer community which we serve.

There is no cookie-cutter kit - we know that each user group in our INETA family is unique. The success of our independently run volunteer member user groups is based upon each one being a grass-roots effort of local people with a common interest. The best part of a user group and of INETA is its community of members.

Building a strong base of volunteers helps each of our user groups face their many challenges, like growing membership, obtaining a venue, getting sponsors, planning meetings, and maintaining a web site. We know that a quality user group will require and demand a continuous effort and huge amounts of your volunteer time -- paid back many-fold in the personal knowledge from which you will gain the highest quality community experience.

Help us in INETA know your user group by getting to know your area INETA Membership Mentor -- your number one contact for membership assistance with INETA.

The enclosed certificate is our formal way to show you that we deeply appreciate you and your volunteer efforts to benefit our shared community as members of INETA. Please share your certificate with your user group members, show your family, and display it at your office. Please read this letter to your user group members. We are proud of you and your user group - each of you are valued members of INETA!

INETA - "The Face of .NET" - embodied in you, our user group community leaders and members!

    Regards,

    Chris Wallace | Microsoft MVP

  • CodeMash is next week!

If you have been putting off registering for CodeMash then you should get off your duff and get signed up!  Starting Jan. 6th the Procastinator's rate of $250 kicks in.  Until then the cost is $175.00 for the conference.  I know a few of our members will be attending and there will be a LOT of really great content, not to mention some thought provoking keynotes.
